My deck isn`t really that old but it was starting to look old. It had patches of black and green buildup on the surface as well as the standard greying you see on most wood after a few years. As you can see in the pictures the deck was long overdue for a wash. The washing is quite simple. I have a relatively weak electric power washer at 1600 PSI. It is good for this type of thing. The washer is a Canadian Tire special...inexpensive.
To power wash my deck I started in one corner and worked my way up and down the deck. I found the sprayer was most effective if I held the nozzle between 4 and 6 inches above the deck and sprayed in long sweeping strokes. With a more powerful sprayer you may need to experiment to find the right nozzle height. One thing to be careful of is getting the nozzle too close to the deck, you can damage the wood. I tried to stay away from spraying at an angle as I found that seemed to `ruffle` the grain of the wood. I have to finish up a few of the boards on the railing and then let it all dry out. I am hoping to get a coat of Thompson`s water seal before the weather gets too bad. Winter will be here before we know it.
